This thesis studies literary criticism in 1960's by focusing on “Chang-Bi”. This thesis examines the critical spirit and realistic character of Chang-bi, which accepted the meaning of the Western civilian ideals and reestablished civilian literature to nationalism. The fact that Chang-bi was founded in 1966 was an important event of the history of Korean literature. At that time, the contents and the editing system of Chang-bi were epoch-making and the editorial policy which emphasized on the culture and current issues led a guiding criticism to epoch spirit and attitude. The characteristics of Chang-bi lay in critical participation in Korean society and extended not only the field of literature but also of politics, economics, sociality, and culture, as Cheong-maek and Han-yang. Especially, Chang-bi systematized and organized the literature of participation in actual society through the Western intellectual theory, and pursued for the reestablishment of prosaic genius and methods of actual participation. It criticized the falsehood, abstraction of purism, and gropes that seek modernity through critical observation to the tradition of Korean literature. Also, the civilian literature, which Paek, Nak-Cheong(백낙청) insisted on, had the same vein as nationalism in the 1960s
