There are three ideas in reforming departments of Korean language and literature of local universities. The first idea is to group a department of creative writing into a school of Korean language and literature. This is easy in using all faculty members but inefficient in enhancing student employments. Furthermore, there are some limintations in removing inherent problems of Korean studies. The second idea is to combine media. This idea links analog with digital by giving consideration to the current society of information. In reality, however, it appears to negotiate to such an extent that barely saves the face of the deparatment of Korean language and literature. It is still true that strong influences are observed in three major areas of Korean studies: Korean linguistics, classical literature, and modern literature. Without breaking this framework, it will be almost impossible to reform departments of Korean language and literature. The third idea is to combine culture or contents. This idea has not been verified yet. Although it sounds new, it also requires a difficult task how the identity of Korean studies can be preserved. As the department of Korean language and literature being transformed into that of culutral contents, it will turn into a totally different department. There will be no expectation of utilization and application of Korean studies. The identity of Korean studies has been already fading away.
