Alain Touraine and Eric Neveu insisted that the prostitutes cannot carry out an organised resistance for the reason that they are a simple gathering of miscellaneous individuals and that they struggle each other for taking clients. Therefore it is said that they cannot have a collective consciousness. Although french prostitutes suffered from the repression of the police from the age of Napoleon Bonaparte, they had not strong intention to realize their collective interest. But, in 1972 the connection scandal between the master of brothel and policemen was revealed in Lyon. The police had an ardent eager to recover their fame hurt severely by the connection. It deployed bitter repression against the prostitutes so as to prove their innocence from the scandal. The repression gave them great suffering. So, prostitutes of Lyon chose to protest collectively for their interest. They made the collective resistance in 1972 and in 1975. Prostitutes of Lyon staged a sit-in demonstration after having occupied the Saint-Nizier Church for more than a week in July 1975. Their demonstration resulted from many regulations by the police. Although socialists and feminists supported the prostitutes, their support wasn’t very important in aiding them. In contrast, the Nest Movement which is a sort of feminist organization supported the sit-in demonstration actively and represented them. The movement of prostitutes of Lyon was deployed by the close cooperation between the prostitutes and the Nest Movement. It proved that the prostitutes carried out the collective resistance to achieve their collective interest. They didn’t succeed in accomplishing their goals to clear miscellaneous regulations. But it had an influence on the prostitute movements of other french cities and feminist movements of the other countries and contributed to the abolition of the regulations by the law in 1994.
