The purpose of this study is to clarify the 386 generation’s political attitude from the public’s standpoint. This study also tries to suggest a proper role of the 386 generation in the Korean society. Methods: Q-methodology, which is effective in studying human subjectivity, is employed. A total of 42 Q-statements describing the 386 generation‘s political attitude were drawn from the three areas of political system, political process and public policy. And, 34 subjects sorted the Q-sample by using a Q-distribution of 11 point scale. Four main factors were identified. Factor A represents the 386 generation’s progressive inclination. This study ascertains that progressive inclination is the strongest factor constructing the 386 generation’s political attitude. Factor B shows that the 386 generation attaches great importance to communalism. In line with this attitude, this study ascertains that the 386 generation takes a negative view of the 386 politicians due to their secession from communalism. Factor C displays the enterprising confidence of the 386 generation. Factor D expresses the sense of mission of the 386 generation for the nation. This sense of mission is related with the progressive inclination, moral confidence, obligation, and responsibility of the 386 generation for the Korean society. The 386 generation’s peculiar political attitude consisting mainly of such factors as progressive inclination, communalism, enterprising confidence and a sense of mission for the nation have expedited their active political participation. And, this study implicates that the 386 generation can play an important role in reconciliating and integrating the progressives and the conservatives, as well as the new and old generations, in their intermediary social position.
