This study was conducted to explore and colect the wild adzuki bean (Vigna angularis var. nipponensis) and its relative(V. nakashimae) from the basins of Namhan and Bukhan rivers in Korea. Their DNA polymorphism and genetic relationships weremeasured. Thirty-one individuals, 17 bulks of wild adzuki bean and 19 individuals, 12 bulks of V. nakashimae were colected from13 colection sites, respectively. These sites are mostly open herbaceous habitats such as roadside bushes. The wild adzuki bean isdifferent from V. nakashimae in morphological features such as flower structure and seed characteristics. AFLP analysis revealedthat polymorphisms were 62.5% betwen two species and 19.2% and 21.4% within wild adzuki bean and V. nakashimae, respec-tively. In the dendrogram generated from Jacard's similarity matrix, two groups were distinctly divided, and they corespond toclassification of wild adzuki bean and V. nakashimae. The genetic relationship of intraspecies seems to be determined by the colec-tion site; accessions from the basins of Namhan and Bukhan rivers were clustered separately for the wild adzuki bean and V.nakashimae, respectively. This might be due to the adaptation of species to locally diferent environments over the long period.
