Adam is a crisphead lettuce cultivar introduced by the National Institute of Highland Agriculture, Republic of Korea in cooperation with the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station. It was bred to be late bolting and to be resistant to cucumber mosaic virus and corky root rot. Montello and Saladcrisp were crossed in 1994. Breeding lines from this cross were advanced to the F5 generation by pedigree selection at Geneva, NY and tested in growers' fields at Oswego County, NY. Selected lines were then evaluated at the National Institute of Highland Agriculture, Republic of Korea for adaptation to summer growing conditions in an alpine area at an elevation of 800 m above sea level. The breeding line finally selected and named as Adam had good growth, compactness, head weight, and high yield (2 year average of 45.2 ton/ha), it was superior to the other inbred lines tested and Ulake, the most popular commercial cultivar in Korea. Adam also has good bolting resistance; it was later than that of Ulake to develop seed stalks under summer growing conditions at Pyeongchang, Republic of Korea.
