The new leaf lettuce cultivar Cheonghagye has been selected for summer season cultivation. The new cultivar is crisp, delicious, bitter taste and tolerant to soft rot (Erwinia carotovora supsp. carotovora). Breeding of Cheonghagye began in 1997 with a cross between LL 126c27 (late bolting and high yield) and PI 273607 (late bolting and disease resistance). We selected desired characteristics in advanced lines generated by pedigree selection until 2001. Especially, we advanced four generations for 2000 and 2001 year, and fixed good lines. These lines were evaluated for yield and uniformity in both the lowland and the highland sites. After evaluation, only one line was selected for high yield and tolerant to soft rot.We named the selected line Cheonghagye. Cheonghagye has brown seed color and obovate leaf shape. Compared to Kanghan cheongchima, marketable yield of Cheonghagye was higher than that of 6% in the lowland and 9% in the highland sites. Also, Cheonghagye has good taste than Kanghan cheongchima.
