It has been well agreed that there was no correct answer about the most effective solution for the social mix of public rented housing sector. It is very important for every country which has long-term public rental housing stock to mix the residents within their communities. Bad urban housing sanitation after the industrial revolution and housing shortages after world wars stimulated local governments to intervene housing market and to build social housing. The U.K. has nearly 5million social housing units. But there had been problems such as stigmatization and social exclusion in the social rented housing sector. Central government launched cross-government organization like SEU, proposed vision of sustainable community, and implemented social mix policies. The policies on social mix can be classified as quantitative method and qualitative method. Quantitative methods can be new building with small scale mixed development, planning gain, right-to-buy, large scale remodelling and rebuilding, like-for like sales, and densification and infill development. Qualitative methods include allocation, rent setting, tenant participation, market renting, retaining higher-income tenants, and improving the incomes of existing tenants. These policy schemes can be analyzed by linking them into 4 effects: tenure mix, income mix, age mix and ethnic mix. Utility analysis tells that planning gain, allocation, and others are very important for making mixed society. According to the survey on area satisfaction of mixed tenure development residents, more than 80 per cent residents are very or fairly satisfied. The study on the U.K housing policy suggests that Korea still needs more public rented housing stock; it needs more policy concerns from government; tenure mix schemes are still important; holistic approach through quantitative and qualitative method is needed; even though two countries have much differences in many fields.
