The purpose of this study is to compare and investigate the similarities and differences of two mask dances, Bukcheong Saja Chum and Hayachine Kagura. Also, other purpose of this study is to reveal the original characteristics of Korea’s folkart and Japan’s folkart as well as both country’s identity of folk dance. The Saja Chum was transmitted from India to Korea and Japan through China and considered as a typical culture transmission. The lion is an image of religious existence in India. Therefore, the transmission of Saja Chum can be understood with the transmission of Buddhism. The lion had strong image of religion when it was transmitted. However, the image of lion was changed to the forms of present day’s Saja Chum as a play, acrobatics, and art due to the territory environmental factors of nature, culture, and religion, and weakening or disappearing of religious characteristics. This study was conducted to compare Korea’s Bukcheong Saja Chum and Japan’s Gongen Mei of Hayachine Kagura. The reasons to select both of the dances were as follows. At the first, both of the mask dances has artistic play characteristics and also remain religious characteristics. In the second, those perform the civil following precedent of removal a bad luck and obtaining good luck. In the third, the Hayachine Kagura is the Yamabushi Kagura and the Yamabushi was a name of person who acrossed from Korea. Based on those reasons, the Gongen Mei of Hayachine Kagura is different from other Japan’s Saja Chum and has significant relationship with Korea’s Saja Chum. This study was conducted based on a fieldwork.
