Gyeonggi-Do has designated the furniture industry as a specialized industry since 2014 when IKEA entered the domestic market and has been supporting the projects. The purpose of this study is to analyze the changes of the furniture industry structure and to set the direction of furniture industry policy in Gyeonggi-Do. Unlike other traditional manufacturing industries, the furniture industry has experienced a CAGR of about 5% and created an 12,000 new jobs since 2013. The furniture industry is one in which the added value is low but the employment contribution is high. Gyeonggi-Do is the nation’s largest agglomerations of furniture industry, occupying 59.2% of the nation’s furniture manufacturing employment(as of 2016). The recent changes in the characteristics and structure of the furniture industry are as follows. First, Korea is the seventh largest producer of furniture in the world(8th in Japan), but its export competitiveness is low. Second, the number of medium and medium-low group of companies has increased. The number of small-sized enterprises(less than 5 persons, less than 1 billion) has declined in absolute terms and the number of companies with sales of 50 to 50 billion won has increased. Third, the market share of large enterprises has increased, and large companies have strengthened their investment in service sector. It seems that many small and medium sized furniture manufacturers have been transformed into partners of large enterprises.
Gyeonggi-Do policy direction is as follows. First, It needs to increase the proportion of projects for the advancement of industry such as design and technology development. Rather than direct support for individual SMEs, the policy goal is to expand the innovation capacity of the entire furniture industry and to build an industrial innovation ecosystem. Second, it is necessary to expand policy area from specialization of furniture manufacturing to living design products industry. Looking at recent market trends, the furniture industry has become a fusion of home furnishing, interior and household goods, rather than being a unique industry group. Third, there is a need to build a cooperative ecosystem between large-small and medium-sized enterprises. Fourth, although the international competitiveness of Korean furniture industry is weak, it is necessary to support the globalization projects.
