This study was conducted to address the existence of reservoir for agriculture and their unique drainage system as a collective of farmers’ knowledge, and to shed light on the traditional knowledge linked to them. To this end, we have addressed some historical changes in the reservoir irrigation system, analyzed the traditional methods of making dikes, drainer and Sootong(a water gate) and recent changes, and approached traditional knowledge handed down by farmers. Based on these studies, it was argued that farmers and agricultural-related private knowledge research should be expanded for sustainability and resilience in agriculture and rural areas.
For the study, field research was conducted along with literature review. Geumseong Mountain, Uiseong-gun, Gyeongbuk, Korea was set as the main survey site. Expert informant and aerial maps show that there are countless agricultural reservoirs in the area. Based on the results of the analysis, field surveys were conducted five times, and in the process, unique irrigation and drainage systems were identified.
The results were as follows. First, the reservoir drainage system identified in the area of Geumseong-san of Uiseong-gun maintained the traditional form, and the historical origin of such a technical system was traceable back to the king Taejo of Joseon Dynasty. In particular, such drainage facilities have been handed down to the Uiseong-gun area until recently in Korea"s own way.
Second, based on field research results, it was possible to clarify to some extent the unclear form and function of Sootong based on literature records only.
Third, the traditional knowledge of farmers related to the drainage system has been passed down in recognition of its usefulness. In particularly, farmers favore traditional wood pegs rather than modern facilities which is like a valve while using of Sootong. These results proved that modern drainage was not recognized as a suitable technology, but rather that traditional technology was more effective for farmers.
These results show the need for continuous research on traditional agricultural techniques and knowledge systems. In particular, the agricultural technology handed down and developed by farmers took the form that farmers could produce and consume themselves, and although part of the form was converted to concrete, the knowledge system surrounding the drainage system was being transmitted usefully to current farmers.
