This study examined how attitudes toward successful marriage are associated with singlehood predisposition among never-married young adults. Using convenience sampling, data came from 307 never-married young adults age 25-39 living in the Seoul metropolitan area. The participants were asked to complete the self-administered questionnaires including the attitudes toward successful marriage scale and the singlehood preference and expectation scales. The major results of this study were as follow: First, the never-married young adults placed importance on ‘Faithfulness’, ‘Being willing to discuss the problems that come up between husband and wife’, ‘Having some time for one’s own friends and for personal hobbies/activities’ for a successful marriage, and reported markedly low singlehood predisposition. Second, there were significant differences in attitudes toward successful marriage by respondents’ gender, age, and employment status. The singlehood predisposition was also significantly different by gender, age, and partner status. Third, after controlling for one’s sociodemographic characteristics, never-married young adults’ attitudes toward successful marriage were significantly associated with singlehood predisposition, such that respondents attached higher importance to ‘having some time for one’s own friends and for personal hobbies/activities’ and lower importance to ‘children’ for a successful marriage reported higher singlehood predisposition. This study suggests wider discussion of the issues about finding a balance between personal needs and married life.
