This paper aims to propose a methodological approach to the use of insight from the field of animation to achieve the believability when designing social robots based on differences in design challenges and neural processing of social robots and animation characters compared to humans. Characters and robots are different in terms of presence, proximity, function, expressive capability, safety, surrounding environment, and interaction style and time. Cognitive neuroscience research evidence so far indicates that appearance and movement should be carefully designed to accomplish the believability as the mismatch between user’s expectation and experience may induce uncanny or eerie feelings. Consistent with the design directions suggested by neuroscience research, this paper found that keeping the right balance between authenticity and artifice throughout the films was the core strategy in order to achieve the believability of robot characters described in animated feature films such as Wall-E (2009), Iron Giant (1999), and Big Hero 6 (2014). Finally, the present study discussed that how the lessons and insights from the films can be applied to social robot design. Overall, this paper suggests that efficient convergence between different fields may result from the clear understanding the differences between them.
