The purpose of the study was to derive the space type of old downtown alleys which were less than 4 m width for CPTED lighting design. Those alleys were distributed in high density residential zone in Korea. Also, alleys less than 4 m width had vulnerable environments to crime and fear of crime. To prove this, the precedent studies for the environments related crime and fear were analyzed. Common elements were extracted from the studies in various fields related CPTED. Based on these elements, two of the old downtowns were investigated. These examinations were focused on alleys less than 4m width. The environments in those alleys in old downtown areas were coincided with the result of precedent studies for crime and fear of crime. Also, in this study, the night lighting present conditions were checked. Synthetically, the spatial environments and night lighting conditions were vulnerable to crime. However, the current CPTED guidelines were focused on the road of over 5 m of width. This is not suitable for the conditions of alleys less than 4m width. As a result, from the result of investigation of alleys less than 4m width in the two old downtowns, this paper suggests 4 typical space types of alleys which need delicate and detailed CPTED lighting plan.
