Examined in this article are several important debate points raised in the recent discussion of the issue concerning Shilla’s [supposed] unification of the three ancient kingdoms, namely Goguryeo, Paekje and Shilla. What kind of approaches and directions such discussion should take in the future is also discussed here as well.
The argument that Shilla ‘unified’ the three states has been based upon the fact that not only parts of the old Goguryeo territory was included in the ‘Unified Shilla’ realm, but also the three states respectively held on to the notion that the three kingdoms actually shared the same root in origin, and from very early on wanted to eventually ‘integrate’ them, with either one of them as the final victor. Unfortunately, this argument seems to be lacking any foundation based on verifiable facts.
After the war of the 7th century, disposition of territories were decided by ‘To whom it originally belonged.’ Shilla was only authorized to claim jurisdiction over the late Baekje territory, and it was up to right beneath the Daedong river line. Also, at the time wars meant a defensive action, subduing and repelling enemy forces invading one’s territory, while the notion of “Three Hans being one” notion only appeared in the 9th century.
In response to this new observation, the main trend studies have delivered their own critical take and rebuttal. But such rebuttal was rather a repeat of existing arguments, and crucial points are yet to be appropriately addressed. In this article, the rebuttals are again critically reevaluated one by one, while future prospects for the discussion itself is also mentioned.
