One of the most recognized pieces of metal inlaid crafts of the Joseon Dynasty is those related to tobacco culture. Tobacco culture includes all the activities and activities surrounding tobacco and smoking, including the acts of smoking, the tools used to smoke, the works of smokers or literary works and arts on the subject of tobacco, and related cultures. The tobacco culture spread in the 17th century as the influx of ships to Joseon brought to the enjoyment of the unprecedented objects and cultures such as cigarette cases, cigarettes and ashtrays. One of them was the cigarette inlay made of iron analyzed in this paper. In accordance with the popularity of tobacco culture, tobacco cases for storing tobacco leaves have become one of the necessities of life. Since the tobacco culture was enjoyed in various spaces including living spaces, the tools used had to be practical. In addition, various decorations were used depending on the class, taste, and purpose of the people using the tools.
The iron inlay cigarette case is decorated with JJoeumipsa(쪼음입사) of metal inlay, which is a decorative technique of the late Joseon dynasty. The cigarette case has a variety of patterns that were popular at the time in its structure and form that combines durability, portability and practicality. It was popular throughout the late Joseon society.
This paper analyzes iron inlay cigarette case focused on tobacco culture, consumers, and the use of materials. Through this, it was possible to confirm the fashionable background of the iron inlay cigarette case in which various factors worked.
