March 1. 2019 was the 100st anniversary of Korea’s Independence Movement against Japanese colonial rule. The March First Movement was not a one-day movement. Thousands of independence demonstrations happened between March and May 1919, all over Korea. The independence demonstration in Kaesong has a historical meaning for female solidarity. All 4 people who lead the demonstration were Christians and educated leaders.
This paper takes notice of Kwon Aera and studies her life and activities. After suffering imprisonment and torture, many people lived quiet subdued lives under the Japanese colonial rule. Kwon Aera, however, was actively engaged in the independence movement, so that she worked as a speaker and participated as a Korean female representative in the international conference. She was jailed and tortured by the Japanese army. She and her family worked for the independence of our country. But even after independence, they suffered from poverty.
In conclusion, the bravery and freedom demonstrated by her activity for theindependence was based on her Christian faith and her suffering after independence is a clear example of the consequences of the anti-communist society created by President Lee Seungman.
