The purpose of this study is to investigate the (iconic) relationship between phonic images of the Korean consonant ‘ㅎ’ and semantic features of Korean words beginning with the Korean alphabet ‘ㅎ’ on the premise of the non-arbitrary aspects of language. The results of this study seem to support the association between the phonic images of the consonant /ㅎ/ and the semantic features of the Korean words with initial alphabet ‘ㅎ’. The phonic images of the Korean consonant /ㅎ/ are known as [-clear], [-strong], [+continuous], and this study shows that these features are also found in the semantic features of the Korean words beginning with the Korean alphabet ‘ㅎ’. Considering the subjective judgements of researchers on both phonic images and semantic features of words, this study agrees that there are some limitations and the difficulties to fully secure the objectivity. Nevertheless, by trying to find what mechanisms operate on the way of word creation and what causes the word creation, this study contributes to further studies on non-arbitrary aspects of language.
