This article examines how Matthew Arnold’s dramatic poem, Empedocles on Etna, embodies the protagonist’s internal dialogue with his mind and a spiritual awakening in reacting to the irresistible moments of his affliction imposed by himself and society. Setting aside the spiritual problems of the Victorian era, the writer refers back to the ancient Sicilian philosopher to investigate the disregarded root and cause of human suffering, his resilient power to cope with it, and the boundary of man’s determination in resolving the distressing matter. Arnold’s Empedocles on Etna reworks the nature of drama, whose chief feature underlies a severe conflict inherent in internal and external domains. Arnold brings forward the protagonist’s deep solitude where he reveals his dialogue with his own mind and frustrates to liberate himself from the heavy burden of grief and solitariness. He is hurled into a spiritual turbulence, yet his unswerving meditation drives him to the fire of crater which ignites his vibrant solution for rejuvenating man’s spiritual power and dignity.
