In November 2018, the beef between three rappers, San E, Jerry.K and Sleeq signaled the emergence of the public discourse over gender issue in Korean hip hop scene. The actors in the hip hop scene who have remained relatively silent on public issues such as the impeachment of former president Park Geun-hye began to respond actively to the gender issue. Various actors in the hip hop scene were provoked and fed into the heated debates articulating the gender issue with other issues. This study examines how and in what context the public discourse emerges in the hip hop scene, and how and on what criteria the actors, interpellated as the privatized individuals, produce and communicate the public discourse. To this end, this study analyzes the domestic bulletin boards of HIPHOPLE, an online hip hop community where Korean hip-hop issues are mainly discussed. In addition, it analyzes the interviews conducted on five underground rappers who have very contestant opinions on this beef. This study finds the dynamic process in the Korean hip hop scene in which the public discourse emerges, and shows how the individualized actors participate in the public discourse in the hip hop scene. Finally it is expected to offer an clue as to how the privatized individuals join in and separate themselves from the public sphere, not only in the hip-hop scene but also in a modern society where the individualization is accelerating.
