Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of stigmatization on out-ofhome care children, the development of their self-esteem, their school adjustment, peer attachment, and antisocial behavior. Methods: We analyzed the effects using the latent growth model using 5-year data collected by stratified sampling methods from a group of 341 children aged 11 or 12 in 2011 (fifth or sixth graders) living in out-of-home care in residential institutions, group homes, or foster homes. Results: The results of the growth-curve longitudinal analysis were as follows: First, there were individual differences in stigma among out-of-home care children during their 5th grade in elementary school. However, as they grew older, the overall development of stigma trajectory appeared to decrease. Second, the initial stigma of out-of-home care children during the 5th grade had a statistically significant negative effect on their self-esteem and school adjustment in their 3rd year of middle school. In addition, the stigma slope appeared to have a statistically significant influence on all aspects of child development in out-of-home care during the research period of 5 years. Conclusions: This study analyzed the comprehensive impact of stigmatization and the stigma trajectories on child development in out-of-home care. Based on this analysis, the study suggests the necessity of intervention to deal with stigmatization of out-of-home care children having problems in their overall development and the need for practical efforts by the social welfare system to reduce the stigma attached to the out-of-home care system and to improve its service quality.
