Report Errors
Despite ongoing efforts to regulate fake news, there has been insufficient empirical evidence justifying strong regulations on fake news. Based on the assumption that the way people perceive the effects of fake news may affect attitude to regulations, this paper aims to examine the third-person effect (TPE) of fake news. Results from the survey reveal that the tendency of third-person effect occurs for the influence perception of fake news. That is, respondents perceived that fake news would have greater effects on others than themselves. Also, The results showed that news literacy was a positive predictor of the third-person effect. Those with a greater level of perceived impact of fake news on the others (PIM3) were more likely to support government regulation and media self-regulation. Also, the perceived impact of fake news on the self (PIM1) has a positive influence on supporting media self-regulation, but not government regulation. Furthermore the narrower the scope of fake news appeared to have a positive moderating effect on the relation between PIM3 and media self-regulation and to have a negative moderating effect on the relation between PIM1 and media self-regulation. Based on these results, theoretical and policy implications were further discussed.
