This paper discusses the creative adaptation of classical Chinese poetry from the Tang Dynasty (8th century AD) by 19th century female French poet Judith Gautier. In her anthology of translations Le livre de jade (1867), she portrays an image of Tang China with a distinctive Franco-Chinese flavor-a unique product of earnest research filtered through her literary milieu of 19th century French poetic movements, including that of Symbolism and Decadence. I analyze the ways in which this work offers a microcosm of transnational and inter-epochal literary cross-pollination, and I argue for a reappraisal of the anthology beyond critics’ often hasty dismissal of it inaccurate and “Orientalist”. I argue that this mode of analysis is limiting for it precludes any consideration of her as a poet in her own right. Instead of focusing on her failures, I demonstrate how she forges her own style by weaving together French poetic styles with classical Chinese poetry. Through analyzing her renditions of particular poems, my paper untangles Gautier’s distinctive Franco-Chinese style as well as strategies she uses to familiarize her readers with the vast world of Chinese poetry. My paper serves as a reference point for discussions on the value of productive literary cross-pollination across centuries and continents.
