Siddhaṃ script is an old classic style of writing that is still used up to nowadays. However, it is a typeface design quite unsuitable for modern society, due to its inefficiency. Therefore, this study aims for finding design which satisfies many young and frequent users, even if they are limited to a small group. In other words, this research would study Siddhaṃ script typeface design appropriate for modern society by referring to Hanguel Somang typeface for several reasons. First of all, the structure of the Korean alphabet in the Hanguel Somang font is very similar to the Siddhaṃ script structure. Moreover, the Hanguel Somang font is a writing style which emphasizes soft serifs in a straight Gothic structure, giving it a modern and refined look. Finally, it is a typeface that is clear and natural, giving us a familiar and friendly impression. In order to study the design of Siddhaṃ script with a Korean application, we analyzed the morphological characteristics of the Siddhaṃ script and Hanguel Somang font and designed the collection of consonants and vowels with a Gothic serif design. In addition, in order to utilize the design proposal, the book cover of Sanskrit’s philosophical literature ‘Upaniṣad’ was designed with the newly developed typeface. For an empirical analysis of the consumers, the stratification extraction method and scale method commonly used in social statistics were applied, and the survey was conducted based on the metering criteria for the formative aesthetic evaluation of letters. The research subjects were Chinese people interested in Sanskrit. The survey was conducted on 300 people in twenties and thirties with a group division of 10 regions in China (Guangdong, Beijing, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Sichuan, Shandong, Jiangsu Fujian, Henan and Liaoning), and 274 cases were retrieved analyzed, excluding the missing data. According to the study, a consumer survey of Siddhaṃ script with Hanguel Somang font was preferred over other conventional typefaces due to its harmonious and unifying features. Furthermore, a simple, unified Gothic-serf style has been confirmed to enhance readability. However, responses revealed that specific word combinations with complex integration of consonants and vowels showed a lack of unity, proportionality and order. Future research will require a design study of more complex structure word combinations. This research aims to work as a basic study for the development of Siddhaṃ script typefaces, and expects further studies.
