The cow was the animal whose meaning changed the most in the process of moving from the pre-modern agricultural society to the modern industrial society. However, as the commodity money economy developed and developed into an industrial society, the meaning of the product as a commodity that could be freely consumed or sold to make a profit was gradually increasing. With the opening of the port in 1876, Korea"s trade with other countries accelerated this trend. One of the major influences was the emergence of a new market that emerged from Russia"s access to the Maritime Territory. Russia wanted to import cows from neighboring regions for use as food for the Russian border guards and residents in the barren coastal region, which started exporting cows from Hamgyeong-do to Yeonhae. Residents of Hamgyeong-do, who had been crossing the border and interacting with the residents of Yeonju, actively entered the new market formed by Russia in 1860, and in the process, thousands of cows went through sea, land, and wheat trade each year. It was exported from Hamgyeong-do to Russia. During this period, exports of cattle from Hamgyeong-do did not immediately develop into livestock. However, we will examine the cattle trade in the Hamgyeong-do region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, paying attention to the background of the formation of cows as a commodity and the medium that connected Hamgyeong-do with global capitalism.
