Since the academic study on Zion theology began, the terms ‘Temple theology’ and ‘Zion theology’ have been used interchangeably. However, examining the spatial understandings of Zion theology and Temple theology, one can observe different aspects exist between these two theologies. Such different aspects seem to show that two theologies have originated from different traditions. This study, therefore, aims to clarify the origin of Zion theology by comparing the spatial aspects of ‘Zion theology’ and ‘Temple theology’ with a focus on the Psalms.
The Old Testament articulates the Temple and Zion as the center of the world, that is, as the place that connects the mythical world with the human world. The Jerusalem Temple and Zion as vertical spaces are where the transcendental and mythical heaven and the human world are interconnected. Especially the vertical meaning of Zion is associated with the Jerusalem Temple in Zion. Besides, the Jerusalem Temple and Zion are also known for their horizontal aspects because, while the temple is a transcendental space, it provides a place for the people to perform rituals in the human world, and Zion is where humans live. Thus Zion has been recognized for its ‘vertical’ as well as ‘horizontal’ features because of the two concepts: (1) Zion as a city and (2) Mt. Zion which is directly connected to the Jerusalem Temple. These two concepts show that Zion theology has its origin in the city theology of the ancient Near East.
In the city theology of the ancient Near East, (1) the Temple exists for the protection of the city; (2) the city and the Temple are bound together by gods of the city; and (3) gods also exist to ensure the safety of the city. Thus the city theology of the ancient Near East is focused on the inhabitants of the city and is different from the Godoriented Temple theology. Such a feature of the city theology shows that Zion theology originated from a different tradition than the Temple theology.
