This article examines minority religious behavior and the collective identity of religious groups. I have organized this preliminary report on sub-themes such as the status of the Muslim minority in Korea, the contemporary situation of Islam in Korea, and the manner in which Korean Muslims interpret identity and institutionalization. Identity as such indicates the wholeness of an individual or the group, and I analyze this with Hans Mol's model of identity, which defines religion as the sacralization of identity. The general situation of Korean Muslims while dealing with identity is also compared with that of Muslims in China and Japan when possible. Moreover, as the historical context of Islam in Korea is important in regards to the identity of Korean Muslims, I also examine this issue. While dealing with the identity of Korean Muslims, commitment, dependability, changes in boundaries, and the functioning of the sacralization process are also considered.
