This paper attempts to trace the changes in the ethnic identity of Koreans in Japan. Since their arrival in Japan during the colonial period, Koreans have maintained a "sojourner" identity rather than as an ethnic minority or ethnic Korean citizens of Japan. As the length of residence in Japan has increased, the internal character of the Korean community has seen a generational shift: the first generation is no longer the community's primary decision-maker, and the Japan-born generations form the majority of Koreans in Japan. With this shift, the awareness that their future is in Japan, not in their "homeland" of Korea, has become much more widespread. As a result, Koreans have begun to search desperately for a new identity in the uncertain and difficult limbo of not having a homeland to return to nor a host society that accepts them. This ontological predicament of Koreans is due largely to the societal discrimination against and exclusion of Koreans in Japan. As long as Japanese society does not recognize and accept Koreans as citizens, Koreans will remain in a rootless existence, disconnected both from homeland and host society.
