This paper analyzes Hegel's critique of Kant's combination of intuition and concept. According to Hegel, the combination of intuition and concept can be understood as abstraction because it is performed in a way that it elevates intuition to concept. Kant defines intuition as an individual representation and concept as universal representation and argues that the two are fundamentally two mutually independent principles. For Kant, therefore, the concept is only universal. However, Hegel criticizes Kant's dualist distinction between the two, claiming that the concept is not only universal but also individual. Hegel argues that concepts can be individual through elevating the special to the universal and thereby unifying the two. This paper will link these arguments to Hegel's critique of abstraction and understand them as an alternative to Hegel's method of combining intuition and concept.
