This study conducted a comparative study on materials, construction methods, types, functions, and distributions related to the characteristics of stone cultural landscapes of Jeju and Bigeum Island, both of which have the geographic characteristics of an island and a similar natural environment, such as having strong winds. This was used to identify the value of the unique stone cultural landscapes of both regions. The results of an analysis based on the similarities and differences between both regions are summarized as follows. It is confirmed that both regions share similarities in that stone resources produced in each region were actively used as materials for the stone cultural landscapes and that the rubble masonry was mainly used as a construction method. In a real observable and tangible sense, both regions share similarities in that single walls and double walls were constructed as needed. With regard to the functional aspect of stone cultural landscapes, stone walls were used because both regions placed a high priority on constructing protective structures to cope with strong sea winds and on establishing private boundaries. However, the bedrocks of Jeju Island and Bigeum Island are basalt and tuff, respectively, and each stone cultural landscape that is made up of different materials reveals its own distinctive images and contrasting visual effects. Furthermore, the history of settlements by residents of both islands or differences in scale according to the island size formed a background that resulted in differences in the distribution of the stone cultural landscapes.
