The purpose of this study is to evaluate the employment performances in Busan, using 2016 Busan job survey data, the new data set collected by Busan metropolitan city to analyze in depth employment condition. The results show the negative correlation between employment size and its growth rate, which indicates the existence of diminishing returns in employment in the area. On the other hand, establishment’s sales growth seems to have a positive correlation with worker’s wage and their employment type. However, employment size of the establishments do not have any statistical impact onto firm’s employment performances qualitatively. In addition, the short-term improvement in business cycle is not correlated with employment size neither quantitatively and qualitatively, suggesting firm’s hiring practice is followed by long-term perspectives. The Analysis on the determinants of employment indicates that sales volume increases employment performance qualitatively, but the establishment’s size negatively affects the performances. The results based on the analysis of economic base theory show that employment multiplier of Busan is the second highest among the 8 metropolitan cities in Korea. The result implies that employment performances in Busan would be better-off if positive external effect such as the governmental support is implemented.
