The purpose of this study is to examine features of online writing by analyzing the national petition posts. Research in regarding to the petition has been steadily progressing from various perspectives. However, this paper is meaningful in that there was no research in the aspect of composition. This study examined the characteristics of the national petition posting by introducing communication theory. There are three main characteristics that are revealed in the national petition. First, expansion of sender/recipient and the occurrence of multiple communication. Second, private and public writing are being mixed up. Third, unequal distribution of generational attention. According to a survey of freshmen in college on their awareness and attitude toward the petition, students recognized it as a very formal one. However, they have a flexible attitude toward writing norms. It could be an ambivalent attitude toward writing and reading. The features shown in the national petition post suggest the necessity of public online writing. It is time for a change in perception of public online writing, which is different from traditional writing.
