The purpose of this study is to understand the "We-ness" within Korea's cultural structure and to suggest that We-ness should be formed through mutual recognition as the foundation for Korean society. In this context, the fundamental question is: can we think about We-ness as a virtue of beauty in modern Korean society? For this purpose, this study carried out the following research processes. First, the main study explored the concept of We-ness, based on the study of the cultural psychology of Korea. It also argued that We-ness should be considered in mutual recognition in order to seek social integration and co-existence to empower a potential strength for Korean society. Second, this study analyzed the theory of recognition by German social philosopher Axel Honneth, which helped in understanding the theoretical foundation of mutual recognition. Honneth’s work focuses on social-political and moral philosophy, as he understands human life as a process of social struggle that broadens the scope of the recognition. The concept of recognition implies the practice of recognizing others in order to be accepted for who they are. Therefore, this study discussed that the new paradigm of relationship needs to be mutual recognition-centered to build up We-ness. Third, this study reflected the theological meaning of We-ness formed through mutual recognition, based on the study of Robert Dykstra, a pastoral theologian. In the “poverty-stricken” society of relationship, we often experience being emotionally overwhelmed about self-identity. Dykstra writes about pastoral ministry in this era that psychotherapist Mary Pipher refers to as “the age of overwhelm.” He suggests the need for the care of the commonality and individuality in the community, based on Jesus' analogy of the shepherd and the lost sheep of the Gospel of Luke. He focuses on the vulnerability of individuals experiencing overwhelm and humiliation in the community and discusses the need for pastoral care in respect of the individuality of "the one over the many" to build up mutual relationship. Recognition is a pastoral theological practice of expressing a beautiful spirit within a community. Through this practice, we will be able to bear the beautiful fruit of relationship, for which we love the neighbor as we love ourselves.
