This paper critically examines the well-accepted account of the kinds of pleasure in the Philebus. Scholars have argued that the interpretation of pleasure in the Philebus should be understood according to the Republic 9, where Socrates suggests that the truth or falsity of pleasure depends on the ontological status of the pleasure’s object. According to this interpretation, only the pleasure of pure objects, such as Forms, are true. The Socrates in the Philebus, however, maintains that pleasure will be true when the judgment that goes with the pleasure is true. He also suggests that pleasure works in both body and soul, or sometimes only with soul. This paper argues, therefore, that a certain pleasure will be true or false, depending on whether the judgment involved in the pleasure is true or false, and that the judgment relies on the measure of the intensity of the pleasure.
