The purpose of this study is to collect and analyze the historical materials of Haigaku in southeastern Saitama Prefecture with the aid of the Administration of Cultural Properties Protection of the city and town, and examine the present situation and characteristics of Haigaku in southeastern Saitama.
Haigaku is a large board on which haikus(a genre of short Japanese poems) were written and dedicated to temples and shrines. There are 34 Haigaku plates of the past remaining in southeastern Saitama. In the chronological order, 14 were dedicated in the Edo period, 12 in the Meiji period, 3 in the Taisho period, 4 in the Showa period, and 1 in the Heisei period. Among them, 12 are accredited. Classified by the purpose of dedeication, 7 were Horaku, which were dedicated to God(Kami) or Buddha and jubilate them; 2 were Tsuizen, a memorial service for the deceased; and 7 were Memorial Haigaku. Although the Horaku Haigakus do not explicitly refer to God(Kami) and Buddha, haiku poets saw the nature with their heart, as a way of paying respect to God and Buddha. In Tsuizen Haigaku, they express their love of predecessors, who loved the nature as well, by describing the beauty of the nature. In Memorial Haigaku, especially “going to the front,” he referred his mental predicament to nature through haiku ideas which were spiritual awakenings about resignations. In the height of grief, they expressed a thousand feelings in just one haiku through nature. Haigaku is a cultural artifact.
Haigaku should be valued as a meaningful cultural artifact and can be a cultural asset familiar to citizens in the future.
