This study adopts quantitative research methods to collect 30 years of data from 1989 to 2018 and analyzes the role played by macroscopic economic factors in China’s total box office revenue. It is claimed that the national economy and resident income level are factors affecting China’s total box office revenue. Thus, a literature review was conducted to specifically analyze the adverse effect of whether the market economy in the Chinese film market––with its technological innovations such as the emergence of TVs and DVDs (VCDs) in 1992–2002––is based on the historical background and sources of the Chinese film market. Although the Chinese economy has maintained high growth rates since the economic opening and reform, the film market at the time was still influenced by the market economy factors such as the national economic environment, market demand, and policy support are found to have had a significant impact on China’s total box office revenue. This study argues that national economy, resident income level, market demand, and policy support are the four important factors affecting China’s total box office revenue.
