The purpose of this study is to clarify the actual distribution of English velar-nasal assimilation focusing on two representative prefixes con- and in-, and to provide a lucid analysis of the process with exceptionality and variation within the framework of constraint- based grammar. To collect data, COCA corpus and two online- dictionaries were employed. Our findings can be summarized like this: (i) if a prefix is unstressed, velar-nasal assimilation does not occur, (ii) if a stress is placed on the prefix con-, it is quite probable that velar-nasal assimilation occurs. (iii) if a stress is placed on the prefix in-, variation with [n] and [ŋ] occurs, but the chance of variation is slightly less than that of place preservation. In order to treat this exceptional property, this study employs the concept of lexically indexed constraints (Pater, 2007) by classifying all items into three: "L1" for the most frequent standard cases, "L2" for preservation in stressed syllable, and "L3" for variation. In addition, the mechanism of partial free ranking (Anttila, 2006) is employed to deal with variation between assimilation and preservation.
