This paper is to explore conditions the negative prefix un- can be attached and explain why the negative prefix un- behaves differently than other negative prefixes like a negative prefix in-. Attaching the prefix un- to some adjectives yields ill-formed words like *unsad, *unfoolish, *unmale, *unfemale, and *unexcellent. In this paper, it will be shown that there are some restrictions: first, the negative prefix un- cannot be added to a base with negative meanings; second, the negative prefix un- cannot go along with a base with superlative meanings; and finally, attaching the negative prefix unto non-gradable adjectives yields ill-formed lexical items. In addition, unlike the negative prefix in- that ahs three different allomorphs [ɪn], [ɪm], and [ɪŋ], the negative prefix un- has only one allomorph [ʌn] regardless of phonological conditions. I argue that the reason is that it belongs to Stratum 2 which blocks assimilation.
