The major purpose of this study was to design and develop a CAI under the World-Wide Web network environment so that learners could learn the basic electronic theory and practice the electronic lab exercise without any restriction of time, space, and platform. In the design of this CAI, the learner control was especially emphasized. Hence the hypermedia learning environment was adapted for the learners to maximize the learner control. The content(basic electronic practice unit in technical high school) of the CAI was divided into four sub units, resistance, condenser, soldering, and lab exercise. Instructional design for implementing this CAI was consisted of three steps based on Reigeluth`s exquisite analysis. The first step was to understand the learning objectives, the second step was to analyse and arrange the structure of the content unit, and the third step was to transform the contents to hypertext or hypermedia mode. Following the three steps, the CAI was designed and developed through the combination of the node-link hypertext mode and the structured hypertext mode. Netscape 3.0 browser and HTML with Java applet and Javascript were used as tools to program and implement the CAI. A learner can proceed a learning activity interactively by using CGI program in a server. A variety of multimedia information such as texts, graphic images, sounds, and videos in a computer database system are transmitted through HTTP service.
