The purpose of this study is to explore what social workers experience and how experience of critical social work that has rarely been introduced in Korea by focus group interview. This study noted that critical social welfare practices, which are rarely introduced in Korean social welfare practices, are practiced spontaneously and used as tacit knowledge by the need for practice sites. In response, it was intended to explore and categorize the practical experience of social workers who have an interest and experience in critical social welfare practices at the practice site and interpret its meaning. Social workers who participated in the research recognized that the activities that were carried out by utilizing their discretion and in solidarity with colleagues and clients were critical social welfare practices. There have been successful cases of critical practice, but there have been many setbacks and failures such as rocking with eggs. Social workers expressed their difficulties in implementing critical social welfare programs while feeling the need and importance of them. As strategies to boost critical social welfare practices in Korea, they argued for “strengthening the capacity of social welfare workers”, “developing organizational democracy”, “strengthening education for practicing critical social work”, “utilizing discretionary power”, and “creating a practice site to tool for political power”.
