This paper is to study Sigmund Freud"s cathartic treatment and his treatment case of Katharina from the perspective of narrative connection and storytelling therapy. Freud treated Katharina with catharsis method. Psychoanalysis not only uses narratives as a form of counseling, but also takes advantage of their therapeutic power.
Narrative has cathartic function and cathartic effect. The narrative can be divided into two layers: story and discourse. The story is composed of elements like characters, events, motives, time, and space. The discourse is composed of elements like storyteller’s perspective, psychological discourse distance, discourse tone and so on. In this study, the case of Katharina treatment was dealt with the layers and components of the narrative.
This case is unique among Freud"s cases, because it was not treated by hypnosis or free association, but mainly through narrative methods of dialogues in consciousness. So the case is easy to access from narrative or storytelling. Since Freud tried to treat Katharina"s hysteria symptoms through narrative or storytelling, this case needs to be approached in terms of storytelling therapy.
In this study, focusing on the case of ‘Katharina’, the cathartic treatment is dealt with in terms of narrative, story connection, narrative analysis, and storytelling therapy. This paper explores Freud"s case of Katharina from the perspective of therapeutic narrative and narratology, and confirms a theoretical backgrounds of storytelling therapy.
