The purpose of this study is to first examine the meaning of Hosea 9:13 and then propose an appropriate translation of it. Hosea 9:13 (MT) is difficult not only to understand but also to translate. This is due to its syntactical or grammatical irregularity and the omission of words as well as the limited understanding of its socio-cultural background. To solve this problem, scholars are making various proposals on its translation by changing, modifying, or assuming the spellings of the text based on textual criticism.
In understanding and translating Hosea 9:13, however, the textual criticism alone is limited. Thus, based on the literary unit of Hosea 9:10-17, to which Hosea 9:13 belongs, the writer tried to analyze the problems related to the meaning and translation of Hosea 9:13 from three perspectives. First, I attempted to prove by the literary structure of the text that the act of taking children to a slaughter in Hosea 9:13b is not a future event but a past event. In the process, I argued that Hosea 9:13 is not a judgment which would occur in the future of Israel, but a charge against rebellion which served Baal in the past.
Second, I contended that Tyre mentioned in Hosea 9:13a should not be changed or replaced to find any other meaning, but should be left untouched. By doing so, I proved that the mention of Tyre has the advantage of not only being well connected with the immediate context of Yahweh’s declaring the deprivation of life as a judgment against the rebellion of child sacrifice, but also showing the continuity between Tyre and Israel in socio-cultural terms in relation to the purpose of child sacrifice. Third, from a grammatical point of view, I made it clear by comparison that Hosea 9:13b serves to shed light on the ambiguity of the problem of Tyre expressed in Hosea 9:13a. I also argue that the infinitive construct in Hosea 9:13b can be translated into a perfect form when understood as an emphatic lamed, which has the advantage of being in line with the meaning of an accusation against the past rebellion.
This study shows the importance of translation, which in the process of translation not only the context of the text and its literary structure are analyzed, but also any word in the text is not carelessly dealt with through social-cultural background research. It also confirms the importance of clarifying the grammatical ambiguity of the text itself through grammatical explanations.
