This paper aims to study applicability of functional theories of translation to literary translation which have been popularly applied to non-literary translation. In order to do so, this paper dealt with Nord ideas the functional approach can be applied in the translation of literary texts. And it tried to apply this approach to a comparative analysis of translated texts. This analysis shows three things. First, the translators have to infer the writers’ intention from the source texts but whether their interpretation actually leads to elicitation of the writers’ original intention is beside the point. Second, the cultural gab the translators face can be bridged by additional information or adaptations. Third, translated texts are independent to live on in target culture as a kind of metamorphosis of the original text. What is found is that limitations in this study notwithstanding, functional theories of translation show some positive potential to be applied to literary translation, just like non-literary translation.
