This study examined the protective effects of fucoidan against neurotoxicity induced by zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) via intragastric route of administration in Sprague-Dawley rats. Thirty-six rats were divided to six groups (control; ZnO NPs, 10 mg/kg; ZnO NPs, 100 mg/kg; ZnO NPs, 100 mg/kg + fucoidan, 10 mg/kg; ZnO NPs, 100 mg/kg + fucoidan, 30 mg/kg; fucoidan, 30 mg/kg). Rats were treated with both ZnO NPs and fucoidan everyday for two weeks. There was no significant change of body weight. In enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) results, the level of IL-1β but not TNF-α was significantly increased in ZnO NPs groups (10, 100 mg/kg) in blood serum. The antioxidant enzyme, SOD level was significantly decreased but not CAT in ZnO NPs groups (10, 100 mg/kg) in blood serum.
