There existed a stream of conservative thoughts that attempted to rebuild Chinese civilization in the Chinese way, taking preservation of tradition and reconstruction of Chinese identity as their ideological task. In Nanjing and Hangzhou, this trend expanded its influence by competing ideologically and culturally with Beijing"s “Enlightenment” movement. The leaders of this trend were scholars who conducted conservative academic and cultural activities at Dongnan (東南) University, Zhongyang (中央) University, Zhejiang (浙江) University, and Nanjing University. Their studies are called the Sinology of Southeastern region(東南國學). They also pave the way for the institutionalization of historical research. Liu yi zheng represented the academic orientation of Southeastern Sinology, while in Beijing, Gu xue gang led the ‘New History School’, and Fu si nian the ‘Historical Materials School’. Whereas Gu xue gang and Fu si nian developed the theory of ‘Doubting Antiquity’, Liu yi zheng established the theory of ‘Believing in Antiquity’. Thus, in the Republican China, the academic world of history was shaped by ‘Liu of the South and Gu of the North(南劉北顧). The Liu inherited the tradition of the Documental Archeology in the Jiang-Zhe region as the theory of ‘Believing in Antiquity’, and the tradition of humanistic pragmatism of Confucianism as the fundamental attitude of 20th-century scholars activities.
