Microalgae are regarded as one of the most promising potential choices to overcome the increasing demand for food and energy resources in the 21<sup>st</sup> century. These organisms are usually cultivated in open or closed photobioreactors (PBR) and utilize the energy of light for growth and maintenance. Over the decades, many mathematical models with varying degrees of complexity have been proposed to compute the growth of algae inside PBR, since they represent the basis for the optimization of process conditions and reactor designs. The majority of these models are based on the fact that light intensity decreases inside a PBR as a result of the absorption and scattering effects of the biomass.
