It has been about 20 years since rural tourism was introduced in Korea in earnest, and many issues and problems related to rural tourism have been raised. Prior studies have mainly centered on quantitative research focusing on rural tourism consumers, and the qualitative approach was very insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to present management diagnosis and improvement plans for rural tourism projects through on-site surveys and in-depth interviews with managers, as well as a literature review, as examples of rural experience villages selected as the subject of study. The village to be studied is a village located in Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do. After being designated as a rural experience village in 2009, it was successful, but it was found that there were many difficulties in promoting rural tourism projects. As a result of this study, issues in five areas were identified as follows: resident participation and experience village operation, experience program development, spatial environment of the experience village, marketing related to the experience village business, and tourism guide system of the experience village business. In-depth discussions and improvement plans for each of the five diagnostic issues are presented for rural village leaders, businessmen, stakeholders, and policy makers.
