This paper studies the importance of local residents’ followership in strengthening the community consciousness, which is the final goal of rural village development program. We empirically analyze the relationship among factors by using survey reponses from 14 rural villages located in Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do. This study finds that the active participation and team spirit, among other behavioral characteristics, significantly enhance the output of rural village development program. Moreover, it is found that the perceptive change of leaders plays the role of mediation between the behavioral characteristics of followers and performances of rural village development. The mediating role is more pronounced when the leaders actively embrace the followers’ opinion through communication and cooperation with the members, rather than through a unilateral decision-making process and execution by the leaders. Lastly, socio-environmental factors do not play a moderating role between the behavioral characteristics of followers and the performance of rural village development. This paper contributes to the literature in that the results of this analysis show the impact of followership on the rural village development and provide a foundation of further studies on the rural village development program in the future.
