Introduction and Background
Sugaya classification is a widely used classification system to analyze the integrity of the rotator cuff tendon after surgery. However, the type III Sugaya classification has not been highlighted in the literature compared with type I/II or IV/V. The purpose of this study was to evaluate preoperative risk factors and their longitudinal outcomes of postoperative type III Sugaya classification repair status. We hypothesized that it would be associated with preoperative tear severity and have a higher risk of developing a retear compared to Sugaya type I/II.
Material and Method
This retrospective study consisted of 127 consecutive patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs involving the supraspinatus/infraspinatus and/or subscapularis tendon. Repair integrity was examined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) according to Sugaya classification at 6 months postoperatively and ultrasound imaging at final follow-up.
