Purpose
Surgical site infection in clean surgery is expected to be less than 5%. Meanwhile, the use of absorbable skin stapler (ASS) for skin closure has been increasing in the way that it can reduce the time for skin closure so that reduce unnecessary anesthetic time for patients as well as providing convenience for surgeons. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of ASS on reducing the skin closure time and the safety of ASS in the point of SSI comparing to hand sewing (HS) closure in patients who underwent mastectomy.
Methods
A single center, retrospective study was conducted. The electronic medical records of patients who underwent mastectomy between July 2015 and June 2020 in Samsung Medical Center (SMC) were reviewed. The data included several known risk factors of SSI (age, BMI, DM, HTN, smoking, alcohol drinking, ASA score, neoadjuvant chemotherapy and previous radiotherapy). We compared the time expended on skin closure and the occurrence of SSI between two groups.
